Untold

Charlotte Gyllenhammar is one of Sweden’s most prominent artists and has especially distinguished herself through her sculpture. Her public breakthrough came in 1993 with the monumental work Die for You, a massive oak tree stripped of its leaves suspended upside-down in central Stockholm. In her installations, sculptures, photographs, and films, Gyllenhammar often portrays questions relating to identity and existence, conveying a sense of vulnerability and fragmentation. She often revisits motifs in her work, like the child clad in a protective armour of overalls or the woman weighed down by layers of skirts and furs, shifting scales and inverting perspectives.

Charlotte Gyllenhammar studied at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and the Royal College of Art inLondon. She has participated in several national and international exhibitions at institutions such as the Guggenheim Bilbao, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC, KIASMA in Helsinki, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Wanås Konst in Knislinge, and Fotografiska in Stockholm. In 2022, she presented the exhibition Croiser/Korsa at Prince Eugen Waldemarsudde and her work Die for You was recreated on its 30th anniversary in 2023 as Die for You/Take Root in collaboration between the Public Art Agency Sweden and Stockholm Art. Gyllenhammar’s public commissions include the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial in Gothenburg which was unveiled in 2007 by former secretary-general of the UN Kofi Annan, Meteorite in Lund, the works &child and Mother in Malmö, and the monument to Dag Hammarskjöld in Uppsala.Gyllenhammar is a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts since 2006 and has been a visiting professor at several art colleges in and beyond the Nordic countries.

Charlotte Gyllenhammar was artist of the year 2023 and her work Untold is the fourth work acquired by the Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation thanks to a gift from the Schörling family. She is the first Swedish artist represented in the Princess Estelle Sculpture Park.
